How does Botox® work?

Action on Muscles

Botox® relaxes or paralyses the muscle depending on the dose of Botulinum toxin injected. The action occurs after 3 to 4 days but the full effect occurs 8 to 10 days after the injection.

This action is not permanent, which is a factor of safety in the use of Botox®. Therefore the injections need to be repeated every 3 to 6 months depending on which muscle is injected. Also, when side effects occur, due to weakness of others muscles at the proximity of the injections, the patient can be reassured that they will not become permanent.

Action on Glands

The treatment of excessive sweating is based on the blockage of the secretion of the sweat glands, by blocking the transmission of the nerve to the sweat gland, which in turn reduces sweating. This effect usually last longer (up to 9 to 12 months).
