Different types of Botulinum Toxins?

3 different Botulinum toxins type A are available in UK

  • Botox®, manufactured by an American company Allergan in a vial of 100 units and 200 units and Vistabel manufactured by Allergan in a 50 units vial

  • Dysport , manufactured by a French company Ipsen in a vial of 500 and 300 units.

  • Xeomin , manufactured by a German company Merz in a vial of 100 units

The units of these 3 Botulinum toxins are not equivalent. An approximate conversion can be done as follows:

1 unit Botox= 1 unit Xeomin= 3 units Dysport.

The brand name Botox is used in the common language as a generic abbreviation to cover the different Botulinum toxins type A (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) the same way that Kleenex became the synonym of disposable tissue.

1 Botulinum toxin type B is available in UK

Neurobloc is commercialized by EisaiLtd in a vial of 5000 and 10000 units and has the license for cervical dystonia. It’s also used when patients nbecame resistant to BTX type A
